‘These drawings originate from an Adriondacks furniture book given to me by a friend who was working in a tool shop on the corner of 6th Avenue and Prince Street in New York City. At the time, little did I know it would inspire to do this collection of drawings some 20 years later. I always favoured rustic furniture, furniture made from logs, scraps of lumber. At the start of this project my aim was to copy accurately the pieces of furniture as they appeared in the photographs through the book. However I quickly realised that what I was most interested in was the skeleton of the pieces of furniture, their structure and the interaction of the forces and counter forces necessary to make them sustainable. As I went on, and in spite of me, I took more and more liberties with the structural requirements. Eventually chairs, tables, chests of drawers would become structural compositions where figuration would mingle with abstraction’.
