Leanne Shapton avidly documents the human experiences through beautiful writing and visuals.
Renowned artist, writer and publisher, Canadian-born Leanne Shapton is now based in NYC, and made her name as art director of The New York Times Op-Ed page. Two books of paintings followed in 2010 and 2013, and her illustrated autobiography, Swimming Studies, won a National Book Critic's Circle Award. As well as art directing The New York Review of Books, Shapton is co-founder of J&L Books, a not-for-profit imprint supporting emerging artists. In 2021, she published Colonial Interiors, her 100-print run of haunting sepia scenes.
Stories haunt her process. Written words layer with watercolour, found photographs with washes of ink. She explores pattern in nature - the symbiosis between chaos and order - through her beguilingly soft, sparse style.
