Lisa Alvarado's practice incorporates painting, music and textiles.
Lisa Alvarado (b. 1982) lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. Her practice incorporates painting, music and textiles, utilising abstraction and repeated forms to produce works poised between the terrestrial and celestial.
Alvarado’s hanging tapestry-esque paintings are considered orchestrations, exploring visual and sonic resonance, as well as quotidian rhythms – the transition from day to night, the drawing of breath in and out of the body. Each one is inflected with motifs of healing and resistance, which subtly allude to her personal and political involvements and imbrications, offering a meditative moment of encounter.
Her paintings are often accompanied by sound and can form part of a moveable backdrop to performances by Natural Information Society, a minimalist musical ensemble for whom Alvarado plays harmonium.
Alvarado recently presented a solo show at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford (2023), and has also shown work at Kunsthalle Münster, Münster (2023), the Whitney Biennial (2022) and Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia (2017), among others.
