Michael Wilkinson’s work examines the aesthetics of political and social expression.
Michael Wilkinson (b. 1965, Merseyside, UK) lives and works in Glasgow. His work examines the aesthetics of political and social expression. Inspired by pop culture, art history, and anarchy, Wilkinson consistently revisits moments of resistance, protest and upheaval.
His work can be seen as a personal attempt to reconcile himself to moments of historical significance or, perhaps, as an effort to understand how these events have already been altered in and accommodated by our collective history.
Wilkinson’s use of motifs of walls and flowers is concerned with re-defining notions of remembrance – notions that are all too often constrained by institutionalised barriers. Through his meditative, meticulous approach to making, Wilkinson seeks to ‘unbuild’ and reimagine various prescribed readings of history.
