The Ascent
In this new series, Simon Phipps turns his attention to staircases within post war modernist architecture. Often overlooked as purely functional elements, these structures reveal themselves as powerful sculptural forms when isolated through the lens.
Photographed with a calm, deliberate gaze, the images explore the rhythm of concrete, light and shadow. As the eye moves upward through each composition, the stair becomes more than structure. It suggests movement, ascent and a subtle sense of transition.
For Phipps, stairs hold an aspirational quality. They draw the viewer upward, creating moments where the view shifts and a new perspective emerges. Interior spaces open towards light, and solid forms dissolve into atmosphere.
The result is a series that captures both the physical presence of brutalist architecture and its quieter emotional register. Moody, tactile and precise, these photographs reveal the beauty and complexity embedded within the modernist landscape.
