New collaboration: The Modern Institute
9 artists join the Wrong Shop with new limited edition prints, in collaboration with renowned gallery The Modern Institute.
The Wrong Shop has partnered with Glasgow-based gallery The Modern Institute to bring forth a dynamic and varied collection by 9 artists, including new work by Lisa Alvarado, Dirk Bell, Martin Boyce, Duggie Fields, Kim Fisher, Monika Sosnowska, Tony Swain, Sue Tompkins, and Michael Wilkinson.
Collaboration has always been at the heart of our ethos. Teaming up with The Modern Institute not only underscores our dedication to showcasing exceptional artwork and supporting the creative endeavours of artists, but also seeks to promote prints as collectible works of art. With a commitment to providing art and design enthusiasts access to unique pieces at a fair price, we aim to cater to collectors at every stage of their art-buying journey.
The Modern Institute, founded in Glasgow in 1997, shares this commitment, working with 58 internationally established and emerging artists and producing numerous exhibitions worldwide. The collaboration’s impetus is democratic and the selection of artists from The Modern Institute is wide-ranging and eclectic. Each print has been highly considered and their format tailored to the unique imagery and practice of each artist. An approach that ties the diverse works together is that all the artists collage material from the everyday – reusing ubiquitous items, incorporating newsprint and magazine images or cropping elements of extant architecture. Sue Tompkins and Dirk Bell take this attitude into the realm of language, exploring fragments of text and concrete poetry.
When the Wrong Shop, founded by Sebastian Wrong, was introduced to The Modern Institute’s Toby Webster, they discovered a shared love of print culture, art, design and music – and a desire to make art accessible to a wide range of people. A connection rooted in their art school education in the early 90’s, Sebastian and Toby discovered a mutual interest in printmaking, poster art and magazine publications from that era, as well as a profound appreciation for the tangible and tactile qualities of print.
This exciting new collaboration is launched to coincide with the Wrong Shop’s first appearance at the London Original Print Fair, London’s longest running art fair. The editions will on display from 21–24 March 2024 on our stand in the East Wing, E1 at Somerset House, book your tickets here.
Sebastian Wrong, Founder of the Wrong Shop said: “This creative collaboration with The Modern Institute is certainly a milestone for the Wrong Shop and helps us get one step closer to fulfilling our mission to make outstanding works of art more accessible, as limited edition prints and engage with an international art-loving audience. I’m delighted to have partnered with The Modern Institute to launch these new works. They are not only one of the great UK galleries in the contemporary art space but we greatly admire their commitment to creativity and public access to art.”
Toby Webster of The Modern Institute said: “We are excited to work with Sebastian on our first prints for the Wrong Shop, presenting new and established works by nine leading artists.”
