Odili Donald Odita transforms architectural space into radiant fields of colour, rhythm and movement, visual compositions that speak to identity, belonging and the shared language of abstraction.
Odili Donald Odita (b. 1966, Enugu, Nigeria) lives and works in Philadelphia. He is an abstract painter whose practice explores the emotional, cultural and political potential of colour. His dynamic large scale wall paintings and canvases bridge African and Western traditions, drawing on both historical symbolism and contemporary design to create works that resonate beyond the surface. Through chromatic complexity and spatial rhythm, Odita invites viewers to reflect on perception, connection and the shifting nature of community..
Odita approaches each project with deep sensitivity to its environment. His installations respond to architecture and light, expanding the experience of painting into a vivid encounter with place. Whether in museums, public buildings or academic spaces, his work transforms walls into immersive environments that suggest movement, mobility and continuity, a visual metaphor for the journeys and intersections that shape modern life.
Artist CV
Odita’s recent installation Continuity, Mobility and Agency at The Museum of Modern Art (New York) continues his exploration of colour as a vessel for memory and identity. The work forms part of his ongoing series Songs From Life, in which panels are named after songs such as Immigrant Song and Roforofofight that narrate stories of migration, resilience and renewal. Through rhythm, scale and chromatic intensity, Odita’s MoMA project reflects on how art can create unity amid difference, transforming public space into a shared emotional landscape.
Odita has realised major commissions for institutions including The Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Brooklyn Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His murals and site specific works activate public architecture with light, energy and pattern, engaging viewers in a sensory dialogue between space and spirit.
Odita represented Nigeria at the 52nd Venice Biennale and has exhibited internationally at Prospect.4 (New Orleans), The Studio Museum in Harlem, and the Baltimore Museum of Art. He is Professor of Painting, Drawing and Sculpture at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture (Temple University) and is represented by David Kordansky Gallery (New York and Los Angeles) and Stevenson Gallery (Cape Town).
