As the experimental practice of Spectral Nation, the studio explores the intersection of art, design and technology, transforming digital processes into sensory visual experiences.
Spectral Nation is a London-based multidisciplinary studio founded by Luke Frost, Therese Vandling and Jon Rundall. Working across screen printing, collage, moving image and sound, their practice is rooted in process, experimentation and the unpredictable nature of materials. Emerging from East London’s independent art and music scene in the early 2000s, the trio developed a language that bridges the physical and the atmospheric, drawing on colour, rhythm and repetition. Their collaborative approach allows ideas to shift and evolve collectively, guided by instinct as much as intention. The studio’s process is tactile and exploratory, celebrating irregularities and the beauty of the accidental, where each mark and layer records both action and time.
Their work moves fluidly between abstraction and sensation. Compositions are built through layered printing, tearing, masking and reassembly, transforming remnants and traces of earlier works into new forms. This cyclical process underpins series such as Eraze Phaze and Epiphenomenon, where discarded masking papers, ink stained and worn from use, are reimagined as vibrant collages alive with texture and colour. The result is a visual dialogue between control and chance, echoing the improvisational energy of sound and performance.
